Book Aid
In 1994, IFMSA National
Officers on Medical Education throughout the world concluded that a lack
of basic teaching and learning equipment (particularly books) was a
problem much more relevant to students in many countries than, e.g.,
medical education reform. Thus began the first BookAid
Project – a
first-ever attempt to collect new and slightly used medical textbooks
and atlases within developed countries, and to ship them to the places
where they would be most needed. Once
an international project
of IFMSA, BookAid has continued since the late 1990s exclusively as a
national project within IFMSA-USA. Previously IFMSA-USA
has collected and distributed books to Yugoslavia, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, and Croatia. BookAid is a
simple effort that Local Member Organizations can implement at their
school, collecting used textbooks and bringing them to the IFMSA-USA
National Convention where they will be distributed to our partner
organizations in developing countries.
With just a little effort, you can make a difference in the
education of our colleagues in developing countries!

Global Health
Residencies Initiative
Coordinator: Kathleen Shore
IFMSA-USA will compile a list of
residencies that include an emphasis on global health. Because of the
large scope of this project, it is a collaboration between several
different global health agencies. The database of residencies involved
in global health will be available through the IFMSA-USA website. If you
would like to be involved in this exciting project, please email me! I
especially need technologically savvy people who can assist in the
design of the database. IFMSA-USA will prepare a comprehensive listing of
residency programs with a global health component as a benefit of
membership for our medical student members. Every residency program in
the United States is contacted once every two years through the GHRI,
and information is collected in an easy-to-use format that will be
available to our student members through the IFMSA-USA homepage. Medical
student members applying for the match will easily identify those
programs that support residents as they cultivate their international
interests. -USA will prepare a comprehensive listing of residency

Global Study
Partners
Coordinator: Amy Basile
Thousands of medical students
nationwide seek international electives as a component of their medical
education every year. IFMSA-USA
supports clinical exchange programs,
research
exchange programs, and village projects that
provide medical students with unique opportunities for international
study. Thousands of medical students nationwide seek international electives as a component of their medical education every year. Beginning in 2005, IFMSA initiated the Global Study Partners position to establish strong relationships with international medical organizations that accept medical students for international electives. Through Global Study Partners, IFMSA-USA
medical student members will have the most up-to-date information
available on completing an elective through an international
organization, therefore greatly simplifying their search. Projects within international organizations open and close quickly so we contact every organization at least once annually. Our students will have ready access to potential opportunities and
won't have to spend time pursuing projects that have already closed. There are over 30 partners available now offering experiences in Africa, Thailand, Ecuador, China, Russia, India, and so many more exciting places. Start your search now!!
