IFMSA is based on the premise of student leadership and involvement. If you have an idea that has to do with international medicine and you would like to see it happen, Contact IFMSA-USA National Headquarters.

Involvement with IFMSA-USA at the National Level

"Following the merger in March of 2008 with the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), IFMSA-USA national officers are now part of the AMSA's national officer corps."

Involvement with IFMSA at the International Level

E-mail us if you are interested in becoming involved with IFMSA at the international level.

IFMSA OFFICIALS - The IFMSA international leadership team is elected every year at the August General Assembly meeting.  Each of these positions require considerable previous experience and extensive knowledge of IFMSA.  It usually takes anywhere from six months to two years of previous involvement in IFMSA before a student is likely to be elected to one of these positions.  For students that are truly committed to global health, serving as an international officer is a tremendous way to gain valuable skills, experience, and connections!

IFMSA TASK FORCES  - Task Forces are designed to complete a transient task for IFMSA.  Task Force coordinators are appointed; however, anyone can get involved with a Task Force.  Some of the Task Forces are described below.

MEDICAL STUDENT INTERNATIONAL  - Medical Student International is the thematic magazine of IFMSA.  It serves to highlight specific issues of special interest to the student members of IFMSA, particularly those issues that are related to the current activity of the IFMSA Standing Committees.  Medical Student International is published when a group of students interested in working on a topic of special interest is identified; there is no regular schedule to the publishing of Medical Student International.  Examples of previous topics for "MSI" have included: aging and health, exchanges, and refugee health.  If you have a particular topic in mind and would like to work with an international team of students on the preparation of an issue of MSI around that topic, E-mail us to learn more about Medical Student International!

student-BMJ  - Many IFMSA students publish articles about their activities in the international medical student magazine, student-BMJ.  Students are encouraged to submit contributions, especially those related to their IFMSA activities and projects.  IFMSA-USA medical student members are also eligible to serve as the student-editor of student-BMJ; more information about this will be made available in early 2003.

TRAINING AND RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT  - IFMSA holds leadership training seminars for prospective leaders in this and other countries.  For those of you that are interested in training leaders, perhaps you could become part of the international leadership training team, or perhaps you could help the international team being some regional seminars in the Americas.

Complete information can be found at the Projects and Workshops link at the left, but we remind you of opportunities for direct student involvement in these initiatives here:

  Most importantly, remember this:

IFMSA is based on the premise of student leadership and involvement.  If you have an idea that has to do with international medicine and you would like to see it happen, contact the IFMSA-USA National Headquarters.  If we do not have a current mechanism through which it can happen, we will try to formulate a new mechanism so that your initiative can be realized!
