IFMSA Goals
and Objectives
Annually, thousands of
future physicians attempt to complete a course of international study;
thousands more profess in interest in learning more about the issues
that shape our global health dynamic. Yet medical school curricula are
full, and typically offer limited opportunities and services for
students with international interests.
IFMSA-USA
was formed to address these challenges. As part student organization,
part international humanitarian group, IFMSA-USA offers American medical
students the opportunity to explore international health through the
global community of medical students that is
IFMSA.
Our mission is
accomplished through representation, international
opportunities, and provision of services.
Representation
The collective voice of student advocates of global health is heard as
IFMSA-USA:

Represents the
United States in the International Federation of Medical Students
Associations (IFMSA).

Introduces future
physicians in the United States to a global community of medical
students, working together on projects and events in the fields of
public health, human rights, disaster management, medical education,
and reproductive health.

Maintains liaison
partnerships with major US-based governmental and non-governmental
agencies active in global health interventions.
International
Opportunities
IFMSA-USA seeks to provide international opportunities that are
inexpensive, well organized, and of optimal educational value to every
interested future physician in the United States. IFMSA-USA:

Offers bilateral
research and clinical exchange programs with medical schools
throughout the world.

Provides clinical
exposure for clinical and pre-clinical students through sustainable
projects worldwide, designed to improve the baseline public health
condition of a particular community.

Conducts overseas
seminar workshops constructed around health issues of international
interest.

Distributes
up-to-date, comprehensive information on affiliate organizations
that provide medical students with study abroad opportunities.
Provision of
Services
IFMSA-USA is a membership-based organization that:

Supports local
international health groups at individual academic institutions.

Collects funding
opportunities available to students for international travel.

Organizes
information on employment opportunities available within
organizations or residency programs with a global health emphasis.

Gathers practical
information to maximize the international study experiences of its
members.

Develops
topic-oriented presentations for student use at their academic
institutions.
